Cientistas holandeses e suecos encontraram a mãe, a origem, de todas as células da pele. A descoberta pode alterar drasticamente os transplantes de pele e os tratamentos de pessoas que sofreram lesões severas, como queimaduras.
Hans Clevers e uma equipa de investigadores holandeses e suecos realizaram o estudo em ratos e descobriram que a célula estaminal que dá origem a todas as outras células da pele vive nos folículos dos pêlos.
A pele é composta por três grupos de células: as dos folículos dos pêlos, as das glândulas sebáceas e as células de um tecido intermédio conhecido como epiderme folicular. Os cientistas já sabiam que seria possível reproduzir as células de cada um deste grupo, mas até agora ainda não se tinha encontrado a célula "mãe" capaz de reproduzir os três grupos simultaneamente.
A descoberta, que segundo os investigadores se aplica também aos humanos, significa que poderá ser possível usar estas células estaminais para reparar lesões graves de pele e fazer transplantes, noticiou o jornal Science.
"Esta é a mãe de todas as células estaminais da pele, é a que produz a outras células estaminais," disse Hans Clevers, da Real Academia de Artes e Ciências dos Países Baixos, no Utrecht, à Reuters.
"Estas células também existem em humanos, nós conseguimos vê-las, e a premissa é que estas células vão ser muito mais eficientes do que qualquer outro métodos usado actualmente para criar pele nova", acescentou.
Os cientistas já são capazes de fazer crescer pele nova em laboratórios usando tecido da pele dos próprios pacientes vítimas de queimaduras severas, mas a nova pele é normalmente demasiado brilhante, seca e sem pêlo, o que lhe dá um aspecto estranho.
Clevers afirma que a descoberta da "mãe" de todas as células vai permitir a criação de nova pele a partir da origem, gerando verdadeira pele com as necessárias glândulas sebáceas e pêlos.
Hans Clevers afirma que os pesquisadores precisam agora de isolar as células estaminais Lrg6 da pele humana o que pode demorar entre 2 a 3 anos.
